Motifs

For our project, we utilized perspective and key components and colors of a particular scene (a skyline of Tampa from the view of a UT student standing at Southard) as our motif, recreating the same piece in three different formats and styles that differed depending on the medium and the artist’s interpretation. While Amanda Galarowicz took the original photo, Brooke Stephens painted, and I drew this peaceful view, the image slightly varied due to each artist’s individual stylistic choices, it is clear and obvious that they are all based on the same source due to the motifs of the key colors used- greens and browns for the palms, blue for the water, greys and browns for the buildings- as well as the key shapes that are repeated in all three such as the distinct cylindrical form of the Sykes building, the curves of the hammock, and general flat lines for the water and grass lines. One thing that is interesting is that each of our interpretations of the palm trees is very distinct, varying from photo-realistic to somewhat abstract, yet because of repeated elements such as color and lines used in creating the leaves, it is easily apparent to any viewer that they are all depicting the same thing.
