Visual Elements and Principles
For my project, I created an abstract piece depicting honeycomb, flowers, and three bees using a mix of colored pens, watercolor, and cut up soda cans. While, because of Gestalt, it appears that these are all cohesive figures, everything in the picture is comprised of non-objective organic and geometric shapes that are positioned over splotches of watercolor in a way that trick the mind’s eye into seeing complete images rather than a series of obscure shapes. The only exception to this is the honeycombs cut from a can, and the cut up can with penned stripes for the largest bee’s body. The dominant focal point in this work is the “canned” bee. This can be seen not only through the use of contrast in the medium, but also through the use of implied directional lines created by the position of the two other bees. Overall, despite the fact that none of these shapes individually would otherwise go together, through the use of color and gestalt I created a scene that comes together with unity.
